Summary:
An East of England company has launched a world-first app that teaches children about correct usage of inhalers through modules and games. Significant improvement against leaflets and videos suggests it is a fun and cost-efficient way to avoid large numbers of emergency hospital visits. Healthcare providers and stakeholders globally are encouraged to spread the app under license.
Description:
In the UK alone, asthma accounts for circa 1,000 emergency admissions of children each month. A major reason behind these large numbers is insufficient training of inhaler use by children in particular. Research shows that proper training can halve these numbers and avoid most fatalities. As GPs do not have the time for the training, patients are handed leaflets or pointed to videos. These help of course but not enough. An East of England company has launched a fun app to address these insufficiencies (see the Picture). Modules and games in the app guide and check children about correct inhaler use. The enhancement of education in this way was validated by a regional University. Correct inhaler techniques were acquired 69% more often on the app vs leaflets, and 36% more often vs videos. Importantly, the app was rated much more enjoyable suggesting it will be picked up more often than a leaflet or video link. The company wishes to license the app to healthcare providers and stakeholders across the network countries.
