Description:
The university offers imaging of solid materials with extremely high magnifications. Various types of microscopes are available, which includes scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope and atomic force microscope. Depending on the type of the sample (powder, solid block with a rough surface, ultra thin film, a biological specimen, etc) the expert team provides advice in the choice of the best way to get the highest possible magnification of the studied object, according to the specific needs of the customer.
Scanning electron microscope allows visualization of solid block materials at spatial resolution - 1 nanometres. Moreover, this microscope is equipped with elemental microprobe system that elemental composition of the sample. Transmission electron microscope allows imaging of powdered samples at even better magnification than the previous technique.
Apart from the imaging options, this type of microscope provides material identification possibilities similar to scanning electron microscope.
Atomic force microscope is used for imaging of thin layers of solid or biological materials at the resolution of approximately 0.1 nanometres. The other advantage of atomic force microscope is the possibility to visualize samples immersed in water (e.g. living cells) which is not possible with scanning and transmission electron microscopes.

Based on the needs of the cooperating entity, this may involve state-of-the-art high-resolution imaging or development of new microscopic methodologies associated with e.g. sample preparation or establishing imaging parameters of especially demanding specimens.
