An Italian researchers group, that is going to start a company in the short term, has developed a desalination technology which is effective, environmentallly friendly,and economically profitable. The technology is able to treat all the concentrated brines that are the end products if a reverse osmosis membranes system is used to treat sea water for human use. It is available for demonstration. This is the only recognized international patented technology that during the desalination process is able to produce: • drinkable water (for human, agricultural and industrial uses); • electricity in surplus on consumption; • chemicals products with high value and commercial demand: NaOH and HCl; • No brine or waste product harmful to the environment. Desalination is a process able to remove all the salts dissolved into the sea water with the aim to produce fresh and drinkable water from the sea water or brackish water. All the technologies actually used for this purpose present on the market have an electrical consumption higher if compared to the conventional technologies used for the fresh water treatments; furthermore, concerns about the potential environmental impacts of large plants with the production of waste brines (which by law cannot be spilled into the sea) limit commercial development. Today there is no technology able to satisfy increasingly stringent environmental requirements while maintaining high efficiencies and low operating costs. With this in mind, the researchers have taken steps, they have developed a new technology for the desalination with extremely high performance and “environmentally friendly”. It is characterized by low operating costs and by the possibility of chemically enhancing waste (brine) through the production of basic chemicals This innovation is an important technological and economic evolution for the treatment of sea water and for all type of brines in general, included brines that are produced by food industries (20 gr/lt of NaCl), canned food, and similar to them. The technology offers desalinated water 99% (for human use) with lowered operating costs, taking advantage of the fact that it is able to produce electricity and to transform the solute (eg. sodium chloride), in its conjugated acids and bases (eg hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide) entailing a huge advantage when the problem of brine management as a waste product of desalination does not occur.
