To improve the circular design of its packaging, a Belgian circular economy food SME is looking for certified fully home compostable, and heat sealable plastic adequate for packaging its cookies. The plastic must offer a barrier protection against oxygen and fats. Commercial partnership with technical assistance is sought to test and if necessary adapt the packaging.
Description:
The Belgian SME produces organic cookies out of dried spent grain resulting from beer production in a “close the loop approach”.
The company is working on the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) : 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure and 12. Responsible consumption and production.
To fulfil its sustainability approach regarding SDGs 14 life below water and 15 Life on land, the SME is looking for labelled fully home compostable plastic adequate for its cookies packaging.
The cookies are currently sold in a plastic package inside a paper kraft packaging which offers a sufficient barrier protection against oxygen and fats. They are looking for an alternative to this plastic packaging to design their packaging according to circular economy principles.
To ensure the conservation of the cookies, the packaging must offer a barrier protection against oxygen and fats and must be heat-sealable. The SME already found plastic packaging out of corn which usually cannot fulfil this condition. Moreover, most plastic packaging can be composted industrially but are not certified for home-compost by TUV Austria or equivalent.
Commercial partnership with technical assistance is thought to test and if necessary adapt the packaging with the cookies.
Type (e.g. company, R&D institution…), field of industry and Role of Partner Sought:
The partner should be able to provide the plastic packaging so that the SME can test the required qualifications for the cookies or to do the test themselves. Technical assistance for the further development of the packaging will be welcomed.
Co-development or demonstration of the solution may also be envisaged but preference is for an existing product (or a product in the process of being certified).
Technical Specification or Expertise Sought:
The Belgian SME is looking for a plastic adequate for packaging its cookies. The packaging must fulfil the following property
- barrier protection against oxygen and fats
- Heat-sealable (not with glue)
- Home compostable with a certification from TUV Austria or equivalent, industrial compost is not enough.
Ideally the Belgian SME should be able to combine this plastic packaging with their existing paper packaging.
