Summary:
An Italian research and innovation Institute has developed an innovative cold plasma (ionized gas at ambient temperature) source for biomedical applications, suitable for the treatment of diseases even of extremely sensitive tissues, such as the cornea. The plasma treatment promotes both disinfection and wound healing. Collaboration is sought under license agreement or financial agreement, for the certification of the prototype and its development towards the market.
Description:
In collaboration with an academic Institute, an Italian research and innovation Institute, based in North East and with a recognized experience and know how in the field of plasma physics and technology for applicative purposes, has developed a new technique for the generation of an atmospheric cold plasma (ionized gas) for the treatment of extremely sensitive biological tissues.
In the source, a flow of noble gas is ionized by means of a radiofrequency applied electric field at extremely low power levels. This technique guarantees that the ionized gas remains at room temperature, while the presence of a population of free electrons, when mixing with ambient air, induces the formation of reactive oxygen species, responsible for the biological effect.
The technique can be applied for the treatment of infected ulcers as well as to induce healing of chronic wounds. In particular, the plasma is suitable for infectious corneal diseases, which are the main responsible for blindness in the world.
The proposed technology is oriented towards hospitals and medical offices of health. Quality and safety certification of the prototype as medical instrument is needed, along with clinical trials to be performed in collaboration with medical institutions.
The technology must then be developed at an industrial level, and brought to the market by companies manufacturing tools for biomedical applications.
The institute is looking for partners to cooperate under license agreement for the realization of the final prototype to be certified, with technical assistance, to meet the market's standards, or under financial agreement, to support the certification process and the industrial and commercial development.
