Summary:
UK SME have developed a web-based online therapy service that provides patients with a personalised and interactive rehabilitation programme that adapts according to their recovery and abilities. For service providers this system can also provide predefined programmes and rehabilitation plans that can be aligned to their best practices. They are looking for agents via a commercial agency agreement and for public and private hospitals and clinics via licence or joint venture agreements.
Description:
Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions are leading contributors to disability worldwide. Globally, between 20% to 33% of people live with a painful musculoskeletal condition. 40% of work related absenteeism is MSK related, costing the UK economy £20 billion annually. 30% of GP (general practice practicioners) appointments are MSK related, equating to almost 15 million hours of GP time annually and over 6.8 million physio appointments. A cornerstone of MSK treatment is physiotherapy, typically accessed via GP referral. Patients are initially assessed by First Contact Practitioners (FCP) then triaged and referred onward for self-management, further physiotherapy or alternative pathways. Physiotherapy protocols vary, leading to inconsistent patient interactions, inconsistent data capture, non-standard pathways, long waiting times and delayed access to care. The waiting list for physiotherapy is long, current cardiac rehab is 52 weeks. Average appointment times are 15 - 20 mins. GP’s do not have the adequate training to manage or deal with these conditions and with limited capacity, follow up appointments may be weeks later or simply not happen leading to poor patient outcomes. The most common solution currently is to provide patients requiring rehabilitation with a printed sheet of paper detailing exercises. These are non-progressive, provide no feedback and do not track progress. This interactive platform offers increased access to physiotherapy services without requiring Allied Health Professionals (AHP) staff. It provides daily rehabilitation exercises and advice, to ensure optimal self-management, by following the set parameters of the programme. Communication can be provided both ways between the service provider and patient. This can be done via a chat function should further assistance be required beyond the information provided. Currently AHP have limited time and resources, usually a pen and paper. This system will provide an efficient method of providing guided rehabilitation required for optimal recovery. Their secure software service provides its users with step-by-step progressive rehabilitation via the following mediums: AHP led video tutorials, written and picture-based descriptions and information sections. Their aim for a simple tailored approach to delivering both prevention and rehabilitation programs. Their pilot is well underway in a number of NHS trusts in the UK, working in post operative orthopaedic care, cardiac rehab, long-covid rehab and obesity/weight management. Each of these trusts, hospitals and departments manages their own unique rehabilitation programs. The team works with the dedicated clinical team to understand the areas clinical needs, from this they create dedicated and collaborative programs that are signed off and then used with patients. They are seeking collaboraton via a commercial agency agreement or for public and private hospitals and clinics to partner via a license or joint venture agreement.
